Discovering Britain for RGS

The aim of the project is to encourage deeper engagement with, and understanding of Britain’s extraordinary and diverse landscapes through content-rich, guided walks by:

  • inspiring young people and their parents to get into geography
  • engaging people to use maps
  • providing nifty helpful tools to understand the landscape
  • enthusing people across Britain to show them how rich the landscape and history is
  • inspiring new audiences to walk - to get out and about more!
  • sharing the experience of the website and its content
  • making Geography fun and interesting
  • discovering connections between areas and stories
  • delivering a different users experience unlike any other walking website

Pixillion was tasked to design and develop a platform to publish accessible, engaging and accurate story-led geographical walks. The content of the walks are to be delivered through a variety of media (written scripts, audio, images, and video), accessible via the new website which is hosted on www.discoveringbritain.org.

Flexing the power of our CMS, the site is all about content management at its richest. And we’ve integrated it with the official OS mapping software too. So dust of your wellies, grab your flat cap and walking stick and check it out!

Discovering Britain

Fully illustrated

Perhaps known for our more crisp, clean graphic design, the Discovering Britain project was a chance to show off our diversity and capability in adapting to different styles. The Discovering Britain website design is almost entirely illustrative in its design and it has a fun, almost whimsical feel to it, that’s fitting for this type of project. To find the right people for the job, we were able to tap into our 12 year old network of internationally recognised illustrators and artists which we’ve built upon as a result of working with clients such as Hallmark Cards, Microsoft Network, Disney and Unite the Union.

We worked through iterative rounds to establish the general look and feel for the project. We then expanded into key graphical elements before adapting that style to controls, widgets and layouts for the site. We were able to streamline the illustration process and end up with a result that was everything the client wanted from the project and more.

Let’s face it. Britain is a very cool place to live and to visit.

It really is the green and pleasant land. To now be able to ‘Discover’ Britain through the new public engagement project by the Royal Geographical Society called ‘Discovering Britain’ is very exciting indeed.
